Hogan didn't sleep in the car, but he'd arrived early, well before sunrise. He'd driven by Sullivan's walk-up. It was dark, as he expected it to be, everyone presumably asleep. He didn't slow as he went past. There were no open spots along either side of the avenue, but he didn't want one, not here.
He drove west four blocks and then south until he came to a Dunkin' Donuts. You never had to drive far to find one around here. The corner store had a small lot. He parked. He could see two employees moving around inside, prepping the store, but it didn't open until 5:00. He left his car in the corner of the lot, out of sight from the front windows, and walked back to Sullivan's street.
He sat on a stack of newspapers outside the closed convenience store on the corner and watched the street. He thought about how to play this. He wasn't planning on staying long, he hoped, but to do what he wanted he needed to know who was and wasn't in the house. He had been ready to write off Sullivan as a mistake on the Feds' part. Just another name thrown out in a meeting to create a list and make it look like they had a plan. It still might go that way, but something in the last day or so had tickled Hogan's radar and he wasn't a man who discounted intuition. If the universe was willing to whisper, he was willing to listen. It had worked out for him so far.
He didn't like the idea of confronting Sullivan directly. Not yet. It was clear the kid knew he'd attracted someone's attention, given how he'd reacted to the tail car. It was also clear, to Hogan at least, that the kid was planning something. He hadn't driven all the way out to some chain restaurant in Natick for the view. That was a meeting with a purpose.
Ross's information was another piece. The kid had a background that said he could be their guy. If Hogan braced him, or even approached him, they might never get any answers. The bank rips might go away, but that wouldn't satisfy Junior. It would only give him another thing to needle Carter with, and Hogan was still trying to avoid an all-out war if he could. He was pretty sure he'd end up dead or in jail if that came to pass.
So, he was out here in the pre-dawn dark and, when the house emptied out, he would go inside and poke around. He wanted to know one way or another if Sullivan should be dealt with or if he could write the kid off and focus on bigger fish, like Junior, and keeping himself walking around free and upright for a few more years.
At 4:45, a man approached the door of the store with a bulky key ring and barely combed hair. Hogan stood. The man picked up the stack of papers and mumbled, "Coffee, five minutes.
